Patience & trialsFrom the masjid's own video, Jun 13, 2026.

Hardship can test or wake us

“If something bad comes to him, he is patient and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will reward him.”

The khateeb, at 43:56

In one sentence

As Muharram and Ashura arrive, believers facing hardship should adopt Musa's conviction at the sea, "Allah is with me and He will guide me", recognizing that difficulty is either a test to endure in obedience or a summons to return to Allah, and the believer wins in both patience and gratitude.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Announcements: weekly collection, summer camp registration, and the Islamic New Year (1448 AH) program on June 28
  2. The president explains his health-related absence and reassures the congregation that board work continues
  3. Muharram is one of the four sacred months; the Prophet taught fasting on the 10th (Ashura) with forgiveness of a year's sins, ideally adding the 9th
  4. The mothers of Medina made special toys to train their children to fast on Ashura
  5. Why Muslims fast Ashura: the Prophet found the Jews of Medina fasting for Musa's rescue and declared Musa closer to the Muslims
  6. Retelling of the exodus: Pharaoh's genocidal oppression, the night escape, and Bani Israel trapped between the sea and the army
  7. Musa's calm answer, "kalla inna ma'iya rabbi sayahdin" (Surah ash-Shu'ara), and the miracle of the sea splitting
  8. Application: diagnose hardship as test (if obedient) or wake-up call (if distant from Allah); close with the hadith that the believer's affair is always good

For the dinner table

This khutbah welcomed the coming month of Muharram and reminded everyone to fast on the day of Ashura, the 10th, just as the Prophet Muhammad did. The Imam retold the story of Musa leading his people out of Egypt until they were trapped between the sea and Pharaoh's army, with everyone panicking. Musa's answer was simple and full of trust: my Lord is with me, and He will guide me, and Allah split the sea for them. The Imam asked us to make that our own motto whenever life feels like a dead end, whether it's money, health, family, or big decisions. He also gave us a way to read our hardships: if we're obeying Allah, the difficulty is a test to bear patiently; if we've drifted from Him, it's a loving nudge to come back, and the moment we return, relief comes too. Either way, the believer wins, because patience is rewarded and gratitude is rewarded.

  1. If you were standing at the edge of the sea with an army behind you, what do you think you would have said?
  2. What is one hard thing in your life right now where you could try saying 'Allah is with me and He will guide me'?
  3. The kids of Medina practiced fasting with toys as a distraction, what could help you practice something hard this week?
