Ramadan opens doors to greater worship

“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala increases your capacity for righteousness during the month of Ramadan.”

The khateeb, at 53:44

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Introduces Ramadan's three characteristics: Jannah's doors open, Hell's doors close, and devils are chained.
  2. Contrasts Quranic descriptions of Hell's doors already open with Jannah's doors opening when believers arrive.
  3. Explains Jannah's hidden rewards, sincere hidden deeds, family reunion, and patient endurance.
  4. Identifies eight doors connected to prayer, charity, fasting, hajj, striving, accountability-free entry, anger control, and forgiveness.
  5. Warns that human influences and personal choices can still undermine worship while devils are chained.
  6. Calls worshippers to increase Ramadan worship, protect their families, avoid harmful influences, and seize the month's support.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Today the khateeb talked about a hadith that says three things happen when Ramadan comes: the doors of Jannah open, the doors of Hellfire close, and the devils are chained up. He told us that Jannah has eight doors, for people who pray, give charity, fast, strive for Allah, make Hajj, control their anger, and forgive others. In Ramadan Allah gives us extra strength, so we can aim for all eight doors and not just the door for fasting. He reminded us that Allah has hidden a reward in Jannah that no eye has seen, and that families who stay righteous together will be joined there, so we should look after each other. He also said that Shaytan can only make suggestions and never forces us, and even when the devils are chained, some people may still pull us away from good. So let's be careful who we listen to and make the most of this blessed month together.

  1. If you could pick one of the eight doors of Jannah to work toward this week, which would it be and why?
  2. Can you think of a good deed you could do this week without telling anyone?
  3. What's something that helps you calm down when you feel angry?
