Stay faithful through changing circumstances
“The one thing we want that doesn't change is our faith in Allah.”
Istiqamah means remaining firmly committed to Allah through changing circumstances, resisting personal desires, controlling one's speech, and consistently maintaining worship until death.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The changing nature of worldly life is contrasted with Allah's unchanging qualities and the believer's duty to remain firm.
- Istiqamah is defined as staying on the straight path despite social pressure, changing circumstances, and personal influences.
- Selective religious commitment and following desires create crookedness; Islam must be embraced completely.
- Recurring sin often reflects entrenched personal habits rather than merely external temptation, including during Ramadan.
- Steadfastness requires upright hearts, tongues, and actions, ultimately remaining faithful through the test of death.
- Protecting prayer and wudu provides practical daily discipline for remaining ready to worship Allah.
In the khateeb's words
“The believer doesn't change. The believer knows his and her responsibility. No matter what time of the year it is. No matter what time of the day it is.”
“One day a lie is bad. The next day the lying is okay. One day backbiting is very bad. The next day backbiting is okay.”
“If the tongue will be crooked, the entire body will be crooked.”
“The one thing we want that doesn't change, is our faith in Allah.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that the world and our feelings keep changing, but our commitment to Allah should remain steady. Istiqamah means holding to what is right instead of letting desires or circumstances decide our values. The speaker reminds us that repeated sins can become habits, so we should examine ourselves honestly. We should especially guard our speech, maintain our prayers, and protect our wudu. The goal is to keep our faith firm throughout life and reach our final moments still connected to Allah.
- What helps you stay steady when friends or circumstances pressure you?
- What kind of words are hardest for you to control?
- How can we help one another remember prayer this week?
