Repent quickly and never despair
“Do not despair of the mercy of Allah.”
Because guidance and faith come from Allah rather than status or human effort, believers should pursue obedience, avoid sin, and promptly repent while asking Allah to guide hearts.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Humanity’s purpose is to worship Allah, obey Him, follow the Prophet’s teachings, and seek Jannah.
- People naturally falter, but Allah distinguishes sins and continually invites sinners back through His mercy.
- The story of Nuh and his son shows that faith, not family ties, defines spiritual belonging.
- Examples involving Abu Talib and Ibrahim’s people illustrate that guidance belongs to Allah, not human effort.
- Allah values taqwa and the heart rather than race, status, family, or language.
- Repeated sin deprives believers of angelic supplication, so they should repent quickly and never despair.
- Announcements address a Palestine petition, Stouffville’s Islamic center, community programs, and practical mosque reminders.
In the khateeb's words
“But Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is waiting for us to turn back to Him at all times.”
“You can do as much effort as you want. But at the end of the day, it is up to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, if this person will be given this hidayah or not.”
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala does not look at one's race, the color of one's skin, or the language that they speak. Rather, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala looks at their hearts.”
“And Allah is waiting for us to turn back to Him and repent to Him. Do not despair of the mercy of Allah .”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Allah created us to worship Him, follow His commands, and seek His closeness and Jannah. We sometimes slip or become less consistent, but Allah invites us to return to Him and ask for forgiveness. Through stories of the prophets, the khateeb explained that we can encourage those we love, while guidance ultimately comes from Allah. He also reminded us that Allah looks at our hearts and our taqwa, being conscious of Him, rather than our background or appearance. We should try to avoid sin, repent promptly when we make mistakes, and never lose hope in Allah’s mercy.
- What is one everyday choice you could make with Allah in mind tomorrow?
- How can we help someone feel welcome when their background is different from ours?
- When you make a mistake, what could help you ask for forgiveness and try again?
