Stay steadfast on the straight path
“Al-istiqamah is to be on the straight path, doing whatever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala asked us to do.”
Islam is fulfilled through steadfastly turning belief into sincere, guided action on the straight path.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- A prophetic statement summarizes Islam as belief followed by steadfast action.
- Istiqamah means staying on the straight path through moderation, avoiding excess and neglect.
- Seek Allah’s guidance, maintain sincerity, and follow the Prophet’s guidance.
- Renew repentance, seek forgiveness, admit mistakes, and follow wrongdoing with good deeds.
- Hold yourself accountable and preserve the five daily prayers.
- Keep righteous company to remain steadfast and remember life’s purpose.
In the khateeb's words
“Al-istiqamah is to be on the straight path, doing whatever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala asked us to do and stay away from whatever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala prohibited us from doing.”
“They are not the people who don't make mistakes, no. They are the people who rush to repent to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and seek forgiveness every time they do something wrong.”
“So, holding our salawat, you know, on time with al-jama'ah as much as we can, will help us to stay and remain on the straight path, al-sirat al-mustaqim.”
“But if you hang out with the right people, you will be affected by their righteousness.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that Islam is both faith in Allah and steadfast action on the straight path. We can seek istiqamah by asking Allah for guidance, being sincere, following the Prophet, repenting quickly, and honestly examining ourselves. Keeping the five daily prayers on time helps us stay connected to Allah, while good companions help us remember our purpose. The message is not that righteous people never make mistakes, but that they admit wrong, seek forgiveness, and follow it with good. This week, our family can choose one practice to strengthen and one supportive relationship to nurture.
- What helps you remember Allah when your day gets busy?
- Who is someone whose good character encourages you, and what do you learn from them?
- What small prayer or repentance habit could we practice this week?
