Resist Shaytan with gratitude and obedience

“Don't live to please the shaitan.”

The khateeb, at 38:08

In one sentence

Believers resist Shaytan by recognizing his tactics, seeking Allah's protection, cultivating gratitude and sincerity, and choosing patience, forgiveness, and obedience over distraction and conflict.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Worship is spiritually rewarding, but Shaytan tries to destroy its reward, illustrated through the symbolism of Hajj stoning.
  2. Shaytan is weaker than Allah, the Quran, dhikr, and the adhan, yet remains a persistent daily enemy.
  3. Iblis's arrogance and transactional worship show that knowledge and ritual without humility and love are insufficient.
  4. Shaytan exploits personal weaknesses, deception, naivety, comparison, and ingratitude to derail believers.
  5. Protection includes seeking refuge in Allah, reciting a morning-and-evening supplication, practicing gratitude, and returning after mistakes.
  6. Patience, forgiveness, tolerance, and counsel oppose Shaytan's aims in Hajj, marriage, family, and community life.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Shaykh Abdullah reminded us that worship and doing good can be difficult while still bringing joy and closeness to Allah. Reflecting on the small pebbles used during Hajj, he emphasized sincere intention and the strength of remembering Allah and asking for His protection. He warned that distractions can affect us even during worship, through hurtful words, showing off, or treating others poorly. He encouraged us to keep trying after mistakes and to appreciate Allah's gifts instead of constantly comparing our lives with others. At home and in our community, we can put these lessons into practice through patience, forgiveness, and care for one another.

  1. What small good deed could you do this week with a sincere intention?
  2. What is one blessing you sometimes forget to notice?
  3. When you feel angry with someone, what could help you respond patiently?
