Study the Sahabah to strengthen faith
“We need to study their lives.”
Because the earliest Muslims trusted Allah's revelation and sacrificed for it despite having few worldly resources, Muslims today should deepen their commitment by learning the religion, studying the Sahabah, and using the Qur'an in dawah.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Imagines Mecca's barren conditions and asks why it drew people.
- Recounts Ibrahim, Hajar, Khadijah, and Abu Bakr's trust in Allah and revelation.
- Contrasts early Muslims' limited resources with today's information abundance.
- Highlights the Sahabah's faith, persecution, migration, courage, and sacrifice.
- Calls listeners to learn the religion and study the companions' lives.
In the khateeb's words
“Allah Will never forsake you Why? Because You feed the poor You honor your guests You help those in need”
“We need to study Their lives And Try and determine To what extent How do we relate to them?”
“What they did have was, la ilaha illallah. Muhammad wa Rasulullah. That's what they had.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah invited us to learn from the faith, character, and sacrifices of the Prophet’s companions. The khateeb reminded us that they had far fewer learning resources and comforts than we have, yet showed deep commitment to Allah and His messenger. He recalled Khadija comforting the Prophet by reminding him of his kindness to people in need. He also described how looking at creation reminded Ibn Abbas of Allah. As a family, we can take these lessons into our week by helping others, noticing Allah’s creation, and learning about a companion’s life.
- Who could we help or welcome this week, following the kindness described in the khutbah?
- What did you notice outside today that reminded you of Allah?
- Which companion would you like us to learn about together, and what would you like to discover?
