Find contentment in Allah's decree
“The real contentment would not be changed by external circumstances.”
The khutbah argues that life's highest purpose is attaining al-rida, inner contentment with Allah's decree, without allowing changing circumstances to govern the soul.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Zakariya's prayer introduces rida as becoming pleasing to Allah and people.
- The Quran presents rida as the greatest salvation, unlike temporary satisfaction from worldly circumstances.
- Stories of Umm Salim and the worshipper of Bani Israel illustrate patience after losing children.
- Imam Ali al-Rida's history shows accepting pressure while preserving religious and political principles.
- The khutbah closes by urging listeners to follow Imam al-Rida rather than Harun and seek Allah's companionship in the hereafter.
In the khateeb's words
“Because the real contentment would not be changed by external circumstances.”
“This should be our purpose of life, that we try to not let the circumstances to, you know, affect our state of Ar-Ridha in order to be qualified to receive the call of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to help us insha'Allah to be the follower of Riza Not Harun insha'Allah Rahman”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that the real goal of life is rida: deep contentment with Allah’s decree that is not controlled by changing circumstances. Temporary happiness may come from jobs, possessions, or good news, but lasting steadiness grows from accepting reality while continuing to act well. The stories of Umm Salim and the worshipper of Bani Israel show patience and trust when loved ones die, without pretending that loss is painless. Imam al-Ridha modeled this steadiness when he was forced to travel to Marv and accept a political position under clear conditions, refusing to let the situation define his principles. We can ask Allah to make us people who follow Rida, content, principled, and pleasing to Him and to others.
- What is the difference between being happy because something went well and having rida when life is difficult?
- How can we show patience when we lose something or someone we love?
- What principle would you hold onto if you were pressured to accept a role you did not choose?
