Trust Allah through life's difficulties

“You want Allah to be with you when it's difficult? Be with Allah right now before difficulty arrives.”

The khateeb, at 36:16

In one sentence

Life's difficulties are decreed by Allah and should be met with trust, patience, gratitude, helpful action, and consistent worship.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Life inevitably includes minor and severe difficulties, and the Quran and Sunnah teach believers how to face them.
  2. Accept Allah's decree and avoid counterfactual regret, trusting His wisdom even when events are painful.
  3. Understand affliction as potentially beneficial, and define true success as salvation and entry into Jannah rather than worldly comfort.
  4. Prepare for tests, appreciate existing blessings, and keep personal difficulties in perspective.
  5. When change is possible, seek treatment, resist injustice, and help others instead of surrendering.
  6. Maintain closeness to Allah through salah, dhikr, and dua during ease, hardship, and recovery.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah reminded us that everyone faces difficulties, from everyday frustrations to painful losses. The khateeb encouraged us to trust Allah’s wisdom and turn to the Quran for guidance through those moments. Trusting Allah also means taking the opportunities He gives us to seek treatment, address injustice, and improve our circumstances. We can notice the blessings we still have and help others through their struggles. Staying close to Allah through prayer, remembrance, and dua during happy times helps prepare us for harder days, while remembering that our greatest success is reaching Jannah.

  1. What blessing can you notice even on a difficult day?
  2. What could we do this week to help someone who is having a hard time?
  3. What helps you remember Allah when you are happy and things are going well?
