Allah’s decree can turn hardship into growth
“You will grow as a person when you deal with the pain in your life by showing deference and contentment to Allah.”
Trials and losses are part of Allah's decree, and responding with patience, contentment, trust, and dua turns hardship into spiritual growth and peace while keeping the believer focused on the Hereafter.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- A story about animals whose deaths unexpectedly protected a family from invading forces.
- Qada and qadr are explained as foundational beliefs, with worldly ease and hardship both serving as tests.
- The four principles of divine decree are presented: Allah knows, records, wills, and creates everything.
- Believers are urged to accept Allah's decree, avoid regretful “if only” thinking, practice patience, and make dua for contentment.
- Contentment is linked to stress relief, freedom from arrogance and shirk, and spiritual elevation through the Prophet's hardships.
- The khutbah applies the message to suffering in Palestine and closes with supplication for relief and protection.
In the khateeb's words
“When we are content with the things that happen to us in life, then there is good in that for us. And in fact, so much good.”
“Know that victory is with patience. And that relief is with stress. And indeed with difficulty comes ease.”
“The point is that it's supposed to be difficult. So that then you turn back to your Creator.”
“You will grow as a person when you deal with the pain in your life by showing deference and contentment to Allah.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that life includes both ease and hardship, and both are tests from Allah. We may not understand why something painful happens, but we can trust that Allah knows what we do not know. Patience during difficulty and gratitude during ease help us live with contentment. We should keep praying, make dua, and take practical steps to improve our situation while relying on Allah. The khutbah also asked us to remember and pray for people suffering in Palestine.
- When has something disappointing later turned out to have a benefit?
- What is one way you can show gratitude when life feels easy?
- How can you work hard for a goal while still relying on Allah?
