Trust Allah through hardship and fear
“They only increased in their iman.”
A believer's perception of Allah and of other people becomes their lived reality, so knowing Allah's names produces positive reliance on Him and good assumptions about others.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Introduction: knowing Allah's names shapes how we repent, seek guidance, face hardship, and view provision
- Story of Urwa ibn Zubair: he refused anesthesia to remain mindful of Allah and responded to amputation and his son's death with gratitude
- Warning against bad thoughts about Allah: hypocrites and the doubters at Uhud show the danger of evil assumptions
- Those who truly know Allah sacrifice worldly gain for His remembrance and rely on Him completely
- When warned of an enemy army, the believers increased in iman and declared 'Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel'
- Satan frightens people and sows suspicion between Muslims to divide the ummah
- The slander against Aisha shows the harm of evil assumptions; believers should make excuses and conceal faults
- Conclusion: forgive others as we hope Allah forgives us
In the khateeb's words
“He did not want to be in a state. Where he could not remember Allah.”
“Instead of fearing them. They only increased in their Iman.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that good thoughts about Allah begin with knowing His names and trusting His wisdom, mercy, guidance, and provision. When hardship or loss comes, we can follow Urwa ibn Zubair's example by noticing the blessings that remain instead of letting pain turn into entitlement or anger. Relying on Allah does not mean ignoring difficulty; it means letting remembrance, salah, and trust guide our response. The khateeb also warned that suspicion and negative assumptions about other people can spread rumors and divide the ummah. We should think well of one another, make excuses when possible, conceal faults, forgive, and hope that Allah forgives us.
- What is one blessing you might forget to notice when something goes wrong?
- How can we check an assumption before repeating it?
- What helps you feel close to Allah when you are scared or worried?
