Trust Allah's decree through every trial
“Whatever is destined to be mine it is destined to be mine.”
Belief in al-qadr should lead Muslims to trust Allah's complete knowledge and wisdom, act responsibly rather than excuse sin, and respond to hardship, loss, and blessing with acceptance, humility, and tranquility.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces al-qadr as a foundational article of faith through the Hadith of Jibreel.
- Explains Allah's perfect knowledge and His prior writing of every event.
- Clarifies that predestination does not excuse sin; believers must strive and choose good.
- Teaches that events occur by Allah's permission and wisdom, using Yusuf and Musa-Khidr as examples.
- Shows how belief in decree brings acceptance, tranquility, humility, and freedom from envy.
- Concludes by advising believers to affirm qadr without excessively probing its unseen mysteries.
In the khateeb's words
“our belief shapes the way we live our lives. Our belief has a profound effect in my worldview and the way I interact with others.”
“whatever is destined to be mine it is destined to be mine. No one can take it away from me.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah taught that al-Qadr, Allah’s decree, is a core part of faith. Allah knows everything, has written what will happen, and allows events with wisdom, even when we cannot see that wisdom. Believing in qadr does not excuse sin; we must still choose good, strive, and trust Allah. This belief can bring peace when we face loss, humility when we receive blessings, and freedom from envy. We should affirm what Allah has taught us without trying to stare too deeply into mysteries beyond our understanding.
- What is one situation where trusting Allah could help you feel calmer?
- How can we show gratitude without becoming arrogant?
- Why should belief in qadr make us try harder to do good?
