Trust Allah when plans fall apart
“If Allah takes this away from you it's because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wants to give you something better.”
Believers should cultivate unwavering trust and good expectations of Allah, especially in hardship, because Allah controls outcomes and guides those who rely on Him.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Asks listeners what Allah means to them, using Ibrahim's question as a starting point.
- Explains trust in Allah through examples involving family, children, and doctors.
- Connects gratitude, dua, and reliance on Allah to His promises and prophetic guidance.
- Encourages good assumptions about Allah when opportunities, plans, or relationships fail.
- Applies the message to Gaza, job losses, markets, uncertainty, and belief in divine wisdom before closing with supplication.
In the khateeb's words
“what do you think of your Lord? who is your Lord in your mind? what does Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala mean to you?”
“because you know that if Allah takes this away from you it's because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wants to give you something better”
For the dinner table
The khateeb invited us to think about what Allah means to us and how our trust in Him shapes daily life. He reminded us to thank Allah for our blessings and turn to Him in sincere dua. When Musa and his followers reached the sea with Pharaoh’s army behind them, Musa trusted that Allah would guide him, even before he knew how they would be saved. The khutbah encouraged us to carry that trust into disappointments, worries, and uncertain times. As a family, we can practice remembering Allah in ordinary moments and keeping good expectations of Him when we do not understand what is happening.
- What is one blessing you noticed today that you want to thank Allah for?
- What would you like to ask Allah for help with this week?
- What stands out to you about Musa trusting Allah when he reached the sea?
