How sin hardens the heart

“When a person continuously sins, their heart becomes hardened.”

The khateeb, at 9:48

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that the heart is the center of moral perception and can deteriorate through sin and desensitization, so believers must awaken it through self-examination, justice, compassion, and divine guidance.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Defines the heart as the center of awareness, wisdom, and response to suffering.
  2. Explains Quranic conditions of the heart: sickness, hardness, blindness, and spiritual death.
  3. Connects persistent sin with hardened hearts, dry eyes, and accumulating spiritual darkness.
  4. Warns that violent media and constant exposure to suffering can normalize injustice and dull sensitivity.
  5. Closes by urging believers to know the Prophet and Ahlul Bayt and pray for awakened hearts.

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that our hearts help us understand, recognize truth, and respond to suffering. He explained that repeated wrongdoing and becoming used to suffering can make our hearts less responsive, like rust building up on something precious. He encouraged us to look within ourselves and consider how our habits, including scrolling through social media, affect our compassion. Even when people around us are unfair, Allah calls us to act with justice. The Prophet's care for a distressed bird showed how far compassion can reach, and the sermon ended with a prayer for living hearts and support for the oppressed.

  1. What is one way you could notice and help someone who feels left out this week?
  2. How could we give ourselves time to care when something sad appears on a screen?
  3. What can the Prophet's care for the bird teach us about how we treat animals?
