Keep doing right and trust Allah's plan
“We continue to do what we know is right.”
The story of Tufayl ibn Amr teaches Muslims to approach truth sincerely, let the Qur'an transform them, begin guidance with family, practice patient gentleness, and persevere while leaving results to Allah.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The khateeb recounts the persecution after the Meccan boycott and introduces Tufayl ibn Amr, a respected Yemeni leader.
- Despite Quraysh propaganda and earplugs, Tufayl hears the Qur'an, investigates for himself, and accepts Islam.
- Tufayl begins with his family, then learns from the Prophet to respond to resistant people with patience and gentleness.
- After roughly ten years of persistent da'wah, Tufayl returns with many families, including Abu Hurayrah, showing the unseen effects of sincere effort.
- The khateeb applies the story to Quran engagement, family priorities, thoughtful receptivity to advice, patient da'wah, and trusting Allah with outcomes.
In the khateeb's words
“are we going to leave the same person that we came”
“we don't know what the impact of our actions will be and so we continue to try we continue to do what we know is right”
“try to work on our family first have patience in the process that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has a plan”
For the dinner table
Tufayl ibn Amr was a respected leader who came to Mecca surrounded by warnings against the Prophet. He chose to listen and judge the Qur'an for himself, and its message changed his life. When he returned home, he started with his family and kept inviting his tribe with patience, even when they resisted. The Prophet taught him to be gentle, and years of effort eventually helped bring many families, including Abu Hurayrah, toward Islam. We should let the Qur'an change us, treat people kindly, keep doing what is right, and trust Allah with the results.
- What is one way the Qur'an can change how we act this week?
- How can we be more patient and gentle when helping someone in our family?
- What good effort should we continue even if we cannot see its results yet?
