Purpose is the antidote to distraction
“The Muslim must have purpose; the Muslim must be goal focused.”
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Opening praise and the khutbah al-hajah; Allah's countless outward and inward blessings
- The Prophet's greatest title: 'Abdullah', his unmatched focus, devotion, and availability to people despite persecution
- Quranic warnings against heedlessness and against obeying those whose hearts are heedless and follow desires
- The smartphone as Shaitan's modern trap: engineered addiction, corrupted character, envy, lost productivity; corporations 'combating sleep'
- Evidence of collapsing attention spans (trend-cycle research) and the hadith of harj, minds 'plucked' before the Hour, linked to youth gun violence and social breakdown
- Remedy: purpose on the macro level (servanthood to Allah, caretaking the earth) and micro level (work and school as ibadah); build traction through goals rather than just banning screens
- Closing hadiths: 'focus on what benefits you' and 'from the excellence of one's Islam is leaving what does not concern him'; direct appeal to youth to put phones away during the khutbah
- Closing duas and salawat
Try this week
Put your phone away and pay attention during the khutbah itself (addressed especially to youth)
Ask yourself daily: what am I trying to achieve, what is my purpose?
Set short-term and long-term goals across deen, finances, intellect, physical health, and business so traction crowds out distraction
Give children traction and goals rather than merely telling them to stop screen time
Treat work and school as ibadah by connecting them to your intention as a servant of Allah
Filter activities by 'does this benefit me?' and leave what does not concern you
