Scholars carry prophetic knowledge forward
Because Islam's prophetic mission continues through the ummah, Muslims must honor, learn from, and support qualified scholars and Islamic institutions so knowledge can reform individuals, families, and communities.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Islam is the single message of tawhid brought by all prophets.
- The Prophet's mission included recitation, purification, teaching, and guidance.
- After the final Prophet, the ummah inherits responsibility for carrying the message forward.
- Scholars preserve prophetic knowledge and have a central role in communal reform.
- Listeners should become scholars, students, or supporters of scholars and Islamic institutions.
- The khutbah closes with supplication, mosque announcements, a fundraising appeal, and a weekly tafsir invitation.
In the khateeb's words
“the mission of the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was to give da'wah to the people, to recite the words of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to the people, to teach them the kitab of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“when we change our lives that's going to change our families when we change our families that's going to change our communities when we change our communities that will change our nations”
“if we can't do that we should become students and learn from the scholars if we can't do that we should support the scholars at least”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that Islam carries one message of worshipping Allah, brought by all the prophets. Since Prophet Muhammad is the final messenger, Muslims now share responsibility for carrying that message forward. The speaker especially emphasized that scholars inherit the prophetic mission, so families should respect them, learn from them, and support the institutions that preserve beneficial knowledge. Learning can change a person, then a family, then a community. A good family response is to choose a regular learning opportunity and help sustain the people and places that teach Islam.
- What is one Islamic subject you would like to learn more about from a teacher?
- How can our family support the people or places that teach beneficial knowledge?
- What change in our family could spread positively to our community?
