Avoid doubtful paths to sin
“You do what you can, you do what you have to do, and then after that place your trust in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
Believers should proactively avoid permissible-seeming actions that may lead to haram, protect their hearts and honor by avoiding doubtful matters, act responsibly, and then trust Allah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces sadd al-dhara'i, the principle of blocking permissible means that may lead to impermissible outcomes.
- Explains the principle through examples involving Ra'ina, insulting idols, and rebuilding the Kaaba.
- Uses the hadith about clear halal, clear haram, and doubtful matters to urge caution.
- Applies the principle to zina through lowering the gaze and avoiding unnecessary gender mixing.
- Connects sin prevention with proactive heart purification and tazkiyat al-nafs.
- Closes by encouraging responsible action, reliance on Allah, and prayers for suffering Muslims in Palestine, Sudan, and elsewhere.
In the khateeb's words
“One of the reasons from amongst the many reasons Is because we as a people And as a society Allow things that might be permissible But will lead to something that is impermissible”
“The one that engages in doubtful matters Will eventually engage in haram In something that is impermissible”
“We should be proactive Right Where before Even falling Into that sin We abstain From everything That will lead To that sin”
“You do what you can You do what you have to do And then after that Place your trust In Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
For the dinner table
The khutbah taught that Islam asks us to notice not only whether an action is technically permissible, but also where it may lead. To protect our faith and honor, we should step away from doubtful matters and pathways that can lead to sin, such as uncontrolled looking. This also means caring for the heart by removing its spiritual diseases. We should do what we can in personal and public life, then trust Allah with the outcome. The khutbah ended with prayers for goodness, justice, and Muslims suffering in Palestine, Sudan, and elsewhere.
- What is one small boundary that could help you avoid a bigger mistake?
- What does trusting Allah look like after you have done your part?
- What is one quality of the heart you would like to improve?
