Let hardship deepen faith and service

“Use your comfort to get somebody else out of their test.”

The khateeb, at 13:17

In one sentence

Allah cares about believers’ pain, but faith is not meant merely to make us feel better; believers must accept purposeful hardship, discipline themselves for Allah, serve others, and seek ultimate relief in Jannah.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Allah honors believers’ pain and emotions, while providing ease and lawful concessions.
  2. Religion should not become merely therapy or a pursuit of emotional comfort.
  3. Hardship should produce purposeful exertion, humility, and concern for accepted deeds.
  4. True relief is ultimately found in Jannah, not in worldly comfort or victory.
  5. Believers should ask Allah to carry them through hardship faithfully and use comfort to relieve others.

For the dinner table

Allah cares about our feelings, and being sad or tired does not mean our pain is ignored. The khateeb reminds us that our faith offers ease and encouragement, while also asking us to grow and do what is right when it is difficult. Prayer and the Qur'an can comfort us, and they should also move us to act. When Allah brings us through a hard time, we can use our comfort to help someone else through theirs. We keep asking and working for relief in this life, while looking forward to the lasting rest of Jannah.
