Trust Allah when life makes no sense
“Hope is refusing to let what you see around you define what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is doing within you.”
When life does not make sense, believers should trust Allah as al-Latif, resist comparison and despair, and let hardship reshape their relationship with Him while supporting others through their tests.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Explains how unmet expectations and confusing hardship become heavier through the meanings people attach to them.
- Introduces Allah as al-Latif through Musa and al-Khidr, showing that divine wisdom may be hidden in the moment.
- Uses Yusuf's trials to illustrate how seemingly disconnected events can eventually form a purposeful path.
- Uses Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas and unexpected supplication outcomes to show that Allah's wisdom exceeds human expectations.
- Warns that comparison with others' timelines fuels despair, while hope means trusting Allah's unseen work.
- Reframes disability as a distinct path to Allah and urges support for Muslims with special needs, including helping them perform Umrah.
In the khateeb's words
“the problem becomes the meaning that you attach to it because the moment itself it didn't break you it's the meaning that you gave that moment that started to break you”
“Allah didn't promise you that your life would always make sense to you He introduced Himself to you so that you can trust Him even when your life doesn't make sense”
“hope is refusing to let what you see around you define what Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is doing within you”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that life does not always unfold according to the timeline we imagine. A delay or closed door may hurt, but it does not mean Allah has abandoned us; He may be guiding and shaping us in ways we cannot yet see. He encouraged us to trust Allah as al-Latif, stop comparing our lives with other people's milestones, and bring confusion back to Him. He also taught that people with disabilities may be walking a different path toward Allah, and that supporting them can strengthen our own faith. We can respond to hardship with trust, patience, and service.
- When has a delay later turned out to teach you something important?
- How can we support someone whose path or abilities differ from ours?
- What helps you stop comparing your life with someone else's timeline?
