Hope in Allah requires faith and effort
“A believer hopes but he also works.”
Believers should never despair of Allah, but combine hope with taqwa, repentance, practical effort, and loyalty to the Ahlul Bayt through hardship and occultation.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- An opening devotional recitation praises Allah, recounts prophetic guidance, honors Muhammad and Ali, and invokes the awaited Imam.
- The first khutbah links taqwa with hope through Allah’s promise of provision and Yusuf’s story of hardship becoming a new chapter.
- Ya'qub’s patience shows that believers may grieve without despair; hope is paired with repentance, prayer, study, work, family care, and planning.
- Examples from Imam Raza, Dua Abu Hamza, Imam Ali, Karbala, and Lady Zaynab present mercy and faith amid sin, conflict, and tragedy.
- The second khutbah uses Imam Hasan al-Askari’s restricted life to teach that wilayah and guidance survive pressure, while true worship requires reflection.
- The sermon calls Shi'a to remain loyal during occultation, retain hope through financial and family worries, and concludes with prayers and Jumu'ah salat.
In the khateeb's words
“a believer may cry but he doesn't lose hope a believer may feel pain”
“a believer hopes but he also works he repents, he prays, he studies, he works, he takes care of his family”
“They can surround the imam, but they cannot surround the light of imamat.”
“A true Shi'ah is not only someone who lives during the time of the Imam's physical presence. A true Shi'ah is someone who remains loyal to the Imam even during of the time of ghaybah.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that hope in Allah is not passive wishing. Prophet Yusuf’s story shows that a well, slavery, prison, and separation were not the end, while Ya'qub shows that someone can grieve and still trust Allah. The speaker encourages us to repent, pray, study, work, care for our families, plan for children, and leave room for reconciliation. Imam Hasan al-Askari’s life shows that guidance and wilayah can continue even under pressure, so believers should remain thoughtful, loyal, and hopeful during occultation. Even in tragedy, faith can help us see meaning, sacrifice, and obedience without denying pain.
- When has a hard moment become the beginning of a new chapter for you?
- What is one action you can take this week while still trusting Allah?
- How can our family leave the door open for reconciliation after mistakes?
