Sincere repentance requires action
“If you have displeased Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in any way, do not delay your tawbah.”
Sincere repentance requires regret, abandoning sin, repairing harm, and righteous action while believers must reject falsehood, accept divine guidance humbly, prioritize Allah’s commands, and cultivate righteousness in their families and communities.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Continues the Qur’anic qualities of the servants of the Most Merciful from Surah al-Furqan.
- Explains Allah’s expansive forgiveness and the conditions and urgency of sincere tawbah.
- Defines repentance as regret, stopping sin, seeking forgiveness, restoring people’s rights, and doing righteous deeds.
- Warns against false testimony, supporting liars, and attending immoral or pointless gatherings.
- Urges believers to accept Qur’an and Sunnah without arrogant denial, even when practice is difficult.
- Applies obedience to family life, prioritizes prayer over ordinary plans, and explains seeking influence to guide others toward taqwa.
In the khateeb's words
“So this Tawbah will not be acceptable until you fix your broken affairs. Until you fix your mistakes. Until you return the Hukuk of those who have violated or stolen.”
“If you have committed any sin, if you have displeased Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in any way, do not delay your tawbah.”
“A true mu'min may struggle following the sunnah of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. But a true mu'min would never deny even the smallest sunnah of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.”
“when it comes to the obedience of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, that's superlative over any other obedience.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah continued the qualities of the servants of Ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful. The khateeb reminded us to hope in Allah’s mercy, turn back promptly after mistakes, and follow them with good deeds. He explained that sincere repentance includes regret, stopping the wrong, asking Allah for forgiveness, and restoring other people’s rights when we have harmed them. He also encouraged truthfulness, avoiding harmful gatherings, and receiving religious reminders with humility even when we struggle to practice. He ended by encouraging prayers for righteous families and explaining that leadership means helping others come closer to Allah through our example and guidance.
- What good deed could you do today after making a mistake?
- What could you do to make things right after hurting someone’s feelings?
- How could you help a friend or sibling do something good this week?
