Arrogance and jealousy can paralyze the heart
“The only thing that's keeping us in slavery is our own arrogance and jealousy of one another.”
Spiritual paralysis is a heart that fails to respond to Allah because of sin, arrogance, and jealousy, and it is overcome through repentance, sincere worship, service, humility, and wholehearted devotion.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines spiritual paralysis through bodily paralysis and the heart’s role in directing the person.
- Explains how sin, desire, pride, envy, and knowledge without humility disable moral action.
- Prescribes admitting fallibility, confessing sins, seeking forgiveness, and engaging sincerely with prayer and the Quran.
- Recommends extra prayer, fasting, helping others, forgiving debts, and experiencing healthy remorse.
- Defines love of Allah through piety, repentance, good deeds, humility, fairness, and following the Prophet.
- Uses Cain and Abel and the Prophet’s concern for the ummah to call for freedom from arrogance and jealousy.
In the khateeb's words
“we all got a couple of dots on that paper now how dirty we get that paper will be determined how severe our paralysis is”
“five prayers a day is not enough dear beloved Muslim not for us not in the condition that we in that's the foundation”
“the only thing that's keeping us in slavery is our own arrogance and jealousy of one another and until we remove that we have the disposition that Allah may not be pleased with us”
For the dinner table
The khutbah used the idea of spiritual paralysis for a heart that knows what is right but is too burdened, proud, or hesitant to act. We were encouraged to admit our sins, ask Allah’s forgiveness, and let sincere prayer, Quran, extra worship, fasting, service, and forgiveness soften us. The speaker said regret should lead to repentance, not endless self-condemnation. True love of Allah and the Prophet should appear in humble, fair, consistent behavior rather than in seeking praise. Arrogance and jealousy imprison the heart, while wholehearted devotion frees us to serve the ummah.
