Translate knowledge across language barriers
“We give them the resources to not only learn but to also teach.”
Muslims should overcome language barriers by translating Islamic knowledge, empowering people to learn and teach, and doing so sincerely for Allah.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The first revelation, iqra, introduces the obligation and value of learning.
- Dhul Qarnayn helps people despite their communication barrier instead of making excuses.
- He serves sincerely, empowers people, transfers knowledge, and attributes success to Allah.
- The Prophet uses Zayd ibn Thabit to overcome language barriers in conveying the message.
- Mosques should provide Spanish-language Islamic resources so converts can understand and teach.
- The khutbah closes with an invitation to support translation work and a dua for the deceased.
In the khateeb's words
“Most men dear brothers and sisters unfortunately they give themselves every excuse not to help. They give themselves every justification to walk away.”
“this help this assistance from me to you is not so I can receive something back but rather it is for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“If Dhul-Qarnayn taught us anything it is that we give them the resources to not only learn but to also teach.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah begins with the first revealed word, iqra, meaning read, and reminds us that Islam honors learning. The story of Dhul Qarnayn teaches us not to use language barriers as excuses, but to patiently find ways to help. He helped people for Allah's sake, involved them in their own rescue, taught them useful skills, and credited Allah for the success. We should make Islamic learning available in languages people understand, especially for Spanish-speaking Muslims, and give them tools to teach others. After prayer, the community was invited to learn about and support this translation work, followed by a dua for a community member who died.
- When have you seen a language barrier make learning or worship harder?
- How could we help someone become a teacher, not only a learner?
- What is one way our family could support accessible Islamic resources?
