Trust Allah through life's tests
“Allah must have wanted this misfortune for me because He wants to do something good for me that I cannot understand for now.”
The khutbah argues that life's daily frustrations and major threats are tests from Allah, and the believer's proper response is to take even small steps of trust (tawakkul), expect good from Allah, and cling to His promises.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Why Allah allows suffering: tests reveal our level of faith
- Daily frustrations, lost keys, traffic, spilled coffee, are decreed by Allah and test our tawakkul
- Musa's followers took the first baby step: they voiced trust in Allah, and He responded
- Higher faith: those threatened said 'Allah is sufficient for us' and were protected
- Story of a terminally ill brother accepting Allah's decree with complete trust
- Expect good from Allah (husn al-dhan), and He will meet your expectation
- At the Battle of the Trench, true believers held fast to Allah's promise while hypocrites despaired
In the khateeb's words
“Because our deeds shape our level of Iman. The more deeds we do, the more nor we receive, and the higher our Iman is.”
“The exact, the very exact time that you stand, you know, you stop at a traffic light, at a certain time, at a certain place, is destined by Allah .”
“You could easily mold it into something good if you use your mind, in a way your heart actually, to expect something good from Allah Ta'ala.”
“If you say something misfortune happened, Allah must have wanted this misfortune for me because He wants to do something good for me that I cannot understand for now.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that daily difficulties and major trials test and reveal the strength of our iman. Tawakkul means trusting that Allah's wisdom and goodness are present even when we cannot understand what is happening. The people of Musa showed that even speaking words of trust and making dua can be a meaningful first step. We were encouraged to expect good from Allah while sincerely trying to repent and improve. When life feels frightening, we can remember Allah's promises, take practical steps, and ask Him for patience, protection, and peace.
- What is one small problem today where you could practice tawakkul?
- How could a difficult situation possibly teach you something good?
- Which dua or phrase helps you feel closer to Allah when you are worried?
