Knowing Allah restores purpose amid distraction

“Knowing Allah answers all these questions for you.”

The khateeb, at 3:27

In one sentence

In an age of overwhelming distraction, knowing Allah through revelation, His names, reflection, and worship protects the heart and restores purpose, steadiness, and spiritual clarity.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Excessive information and social media create distraction, exhaustion, and disconnection from Allah and reality.
  2. Knowing Allah is essential for purpose, identity, and meaningful supplication through His names.
  3. Distraction weakens solitude, deep reflection, prayerful presence, and softness of heart.
  4. Believers can know Allah through the Quran, His names, creation, and daily events and trials.
  5. A daily phone-free period, protected mornings, Quran, and private worship can rebuild connection with Allah.
Try this week
Set aside 20, 30 minutes each day for private time with Allah, away from the phone.
Pair this time with tahajjud or qiyam, or use it before sleep if waking before Fajr is difficult.
Avoid touching the phone immediately after waking; delay it for an hour or two and use a separate alarm.
Study the Quran in a language you understand and learn the meanings of Allah’s names.
Reflect on creation, daily events, blessings, mistakes, and trials as signs of Allah’s power, mercy, wisdom, and knowledge.

For the dinner table

Shaykh Yaser Birjas warned that endless phones, videos, and information can fill the heart while leaving us spiritually tired. He said knowing Allah is not a luxury because it gives us purpose and teaches us who we are as servants. We can know Allah through the Quran, the meanings of His beautiful names, reflection on creation, and attention to what happens in our lives. He encouraged each person to set aside 20, 30 minutes of private time with Allah, ideally with tahajjud, qiyam, or time before sleep, and to begin the morning without immediately touching the phone. The goal is a quieter, more reflective heart that stays steady in difficult times.

  1. What is one phone habit you could change to make more quiet time?
  2. Which of Allah’s names would you turn to when you need help, mercy, or protection?
  3. What is something in nature or daily life that made you think about Allah this week?
