Blessings and hardship are both tests

“Gratitude is shown through recognizing that God has given to me and so I must give to other people.”

The khateeb, at 9:40

In one sentence

Both blessing and hardship are tests from Allah, and believers should respond to blessing with gratitude and generosity and to hardship with patient trust.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Life alternates between blessing and trial, and neither state alone proves divine favor or displeasure.
  2. Blessings such as health, security, wealth, and privilege test whether people recognize Allah as their source and share them with others.
  3. Hardship can be endured through remembering Allah’s blessings, accepting divine decree, and trusting that trials may elevate a person.
  4. The Prophet’s complete example included both joy and sorrow, victory and defeat, while remaining patient and grateful.
  5. The khutbah closes by calling the community to Muhammadan character, mercy, worship, love, and service.
Try this week
Recognize blessings as coming from Allah and thank Him by giving others what you value.
Use health, security, wealth, and privilege to uplift people rather than serving only yourself.
When facing hardship, practice patience without denying grief or emotion, while trusting Allah’s knowledge and decree.
Show mercy, love, and service in ways that make the community worthy of being the Ummah of Muhammad.
