How to keep the heart soft
“Be careful of allowing the heart to become hard so that it can be receptive to the message of the truth.”
Believers must guard against hardening their hearts by consistently following revelation, reading the Qur'an, imitating the Prophet's example, and treating fellow Muslims with mercy.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Introduces the danger of hard hearts through a passage from Surah al-Hajj.
- Explains that Satan exploits preexisting sickness, stubbornness, and hypocrisy in people's hearts.
- Calls listeners to self-reflection and warns that rejecting revelation harms people themselves.
- Emphasizes that true knowledge requires belief and action, especially consistent obligatory worship.
- Presents the Prophet as a demanding, merciful example rather than merely a nice person.
- Identifies rudeness, neglecting Qur'an reading, imitation, excuses, and communal harshness as causes of hardness.
- Concludes by urging mercy, supplication, unity, and softer hearts within the ummah.
In the khateeb's words
“the warning for me and you today is be careful of allowing the heart to become hard so that it can be receptive to the message of the truth”
“we have to work a lot harder at loving one another and we don't want to excuse bad behavior but at the same time we don't want our hearts to become hard”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us to care for our hearts so that we can receive Allah's guidance with humility. The khateeb asked us to look honestly at ourselves and notice when stubbornness or excuses get in the way. He encouraged us to keep working on our daily prayers and to read the Quran ourselves, remembering that struggling with recitation also brings reward. He reminded us that following the Prophet means showing good character, even when it takes effort or inconveniences us. As a family, we can help one another grow, pray for people who upset us, and keep loving one another without excusing bad behavior.
- What helps you listen when someone gives you a reminder you don't want to hear?
- How could we help each other make time for prayer and reading the Quran this week?
- What du'a could you make for someone you have found difficult to get along with?
