Use health and time before they pass
“It means I take that blessing and I use it.”
In one sentence
Muslims should recognize health and free time as entrusted blessings, use them meaningfully in worship and service, and seek barakah before being held accountable for them.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Everyday blessings are easily forgotten amid personal frustrations.
- Gaza and the resilience of others prompt gratitude and perspective.
- A hadith identifies health and free time as commonly neglected blessings.
- Health is an amanah to maintain and use for worship, service, family, and kindness.
- Free time should be used purposefully, with barakah sought through worship, charity, dua, and honoring parents.
- The body and time belong to Allah and will be subjects of accountability.
Try this week
Take stock of blessings instead of focusing only on personal frustrations.
Maintain physical, mental, and spiritual health through fitness, mindful diet, adequate sleep, and balanced worship.
Use health to pray, smile, help others, volunteer, and spend time with family.
Use commutes and waiting periods for dhikr rather than letting them disappear.
Ask Allah for barakah in time and provision, while making dua, giving charity, and honoring parents.
Review how weekends and other free time are spent, then redirect some toward beneficial worldly and spiritual goals.

Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“There are so many things we can talk about, but Rasulullah says there are two blessings that are really hidden in plain sight.”
“To have a blessing doesn't just mean I sit over there and I say, "Alhamdulillah." It means I take that blessing and I use it.”
“The body that we have, this vehicle, the time that we have that we're enjoying, we're renting it from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Allah has given us many blessings, especially our health and the free time in our day. We often notice these gifts only after illness, exhaustion, or a painful injury reminds us what we had. The khutbah teaches that gratitude means using health to pray, help people, smile, care for family, and look after our bodies. It also means using our free time wisely and asking Allah to place barakah in it, because one day we will answer for how we spent it.
- What is one ordinary blessing you noticed today?
- How could you use your health to help someone this week?
- What is one way to make your free time more meaningful?
