Keep Ramadan's love alive all year
“The point of fasting, of observing Ramadan, is to cultivate this relationship, this love for Allah Ta'ala.”
Ramadan's deepest purpose is to cultivate love for Allah, and believers should preserve and grow that love after Ramadan so they live in obedience while longing to meet Him.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Interprets the Bukhari hadith about a fasting person's two moments of happiness.
- Explains Ramadan as cultivation of taqwa and love for Allah, not merely future reward.
- Urges listeners to preserve Ramadan's spiritual momentum throughout the year.
- Uses Quranic descriptions and biographical examples to illustrate a beautiful ending.
- Calls for steady year-over-year spiritual growth and continued obedience.
- Closes with a dua and encouragement to attend the community janazah.
In the khateeb's words
“The point of fasting, of observing Ramadan, is to cultivate this relationship, this love for Allah Ta'ala.”
“But now our task is that we take this love, we try to preserve it, and then we try to let that motivate us for the rest of our lives.”
“The purpose of Ramadan is that we can build on that momentum.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that a fasting person has two moments of happiness: breaking the fast and meeting Allah. He invited us to understand that second happiness as the joy of meeting the One we love, as well as receiving a reward. Ramadan helps us grow that love, and even small steps in prayer, fasting, or charity are reasons to be grateful for Allah's help. Our task now is to keep those good habits and grow closer to Allah throughout the year. The stories of beautiful endings were reminders to live in obedience to Allah, while remembering that a person does not have to pass away during prayer to have a good ending.
- What is one good thing you did more often in Ramadan that you would like to keep doing?
- How could we help each other remember Allah during a busy school or work day?
- What could our family do to keep giving generously after Ramadan?
