Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Apr 3, 2026.

Taqwa means protecting yourself from sin

“Taqwa is leaving that space between you and that sin.”

The khateeb, at 2:41

In one sentence

Islamic worship and moral guidance benefit the believer, so taqwa means protecting oneself from sin, acting rightly, and turning knowledge into practice.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Defines taqwa as preventive distance from sin and frames the believer’s relationship with Allah.
  2. Explains that prayer, fasting, zakat, and other obligations benefit humans rather than Allah.
  3. Argues that sin and neglecting obligations oppress the self by violating bodily, spiritual, and natural rights.
  4. Applies this principle to fairness, accountability, generosity, and holistic judgment in relationships.
  5. Emphasizes that good deeds return to the doer and encourages compromise and regular giving.
  6. Distinguishes knowledge from rushd, using knowledge to act rightly, then closes with prayers for guidance, unity, and oppressed Muslims.

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that Allah does not need our worship; we need prayer, fasting, charity, and guidance. Taqwa means creating space between ourselves and sin, like taking care of our health before illness grows. When we do good, act fairly, and give generously, we are also helping and cleansing ourselves. Knowledge matters most when it leads us to rushd, the wisdom and direction to follow what is right. We ended by asking Allah to guide and unite us and to help people suffering from oppression around the world.

  1. What is one small way you can make space between yourself and a temptation this week?
  2. How could doing something kind help you too, even if nobody praises you?
  3. What is one thing you know is right that you can practice, not just talk about?
