Turn to Allah in times of distress
“At this moment just say la ilaha illallah.”
In times of personal and communal distress, believers should return to Allah through tawhid-centered supplications, salawat, repentance, and righteous deeds, trusting that Allah can release hardship and rescue those who believe.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces personal and communal hardship and the Prophet’s supplication for distress transmitted by Ibn Abbas.
- Explains Allah’s names al-Azim and al-Halim, emphasizing His greatness, patience, and opportunity for repentance.
- Explains Allah’s lordship over the heavens, earth, and Throne, presenting tawhid as the ultimate refuge.
- Encourages salawat, persistent dua, and righteous deeds such as charity, honoring parents, family ties, Quran, and adhkar.
- Reflects on Yunus’s supplication in darkness and Allah’s promise to rescue believers.
- Calls listeners to repeat the supplications and closes with prayers for sufferers in Gaza, Sudan, and elsewhere.
In the khateeb's words
“If you think there is no way out, if you lose all hope, If you despair, If you gave up on everything and everyone, then at this moment just say la ilaha illallah.”
“So Allah is the Lord of the Heaven and Earth. everything in it. It's under His control. Nothing on this dunya, nothing on this earth, nothing in the heavens, nothing on earth is out of His control.”
“righteous deeds and good deeds, charity and being dutiful to parents, maintaining good family ties, all kind of good deeds that you could do, recitation of Quran, the adhkar, the salawat.”
“Not only that, but we will also save the believers. If Allah did not say that last part of the ayah, we would say, MashaAllah, this is a beautiful story.”
For the dinner table
Hardship can affect our communities, families, work, studies, sleep, and worship. The khutbah teaches us to turn back to Allah by repeating the supplication that begins with la ilaha illallah and remembering that Allah is Great, Forbearing, and Lord over all creation. It also points to Yunus, who was rescued after turning to Allah in darkness, giving believers reason to hope. We can respond with persistent dua, salawat, Quran, adhkar, charity, honoring parents, and maintaining family ties. The khutbah invites us to trust Allah’s mercy while asking relief for people suffering everywhere.
- What helps you remember Allah when you feel worried or overwhelmed?
- Which good deed could our family practice together this week?
- What do you think Yunus learned when he prayed in the darkness?
