God-consciousness brings peace of mind
“There is no better Janna in this world than the peace of mind.”
Human life unfolds in three stages, acquiring knowledge, applying it through work and family, and retiring into peace of mind, and true worldly happiness depends on God-consciousness rather than wealth alone.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The speaker recites opening passages of Surah al-Baqarah and interprets them as describing human life stages.
- The first third of life is devoted to acquiring knowledge and professional training.
- The second third applies that knowledge through careers, wealth-building, marriage, and raising children.
- The final stage is retirement, an empty nest, rest, and companionship with one’s spouse.
- Peace of mind is presented as the worldly Jannah, illustrated through the tragedy of wealthy Christina Onassis.
In the khateeb's words
“So the first one-third is spent in acquisition of knowledge. Then comes the time to put this knowledge into practice.”
“The person who is God-fearing will have two Jannas. One in this life. One hereafter.”
“There is no better Janna in this world than the peace of mind.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah presented human life as three broad stages: learning, practicing what we learn, and eventually resting in retirement. The first stage is meant for gaining knowledge, while the second is for using that knowledge through work, family, and service. In the final stage, a person hopes to enjoy peace of mind after the struggles and responsibilities of life. The khateeb reminded us that wealth alone cannot provide happiness, and that true peace comes from being God-fearing and living well. He also emphasized the importance of companionship, especially between husband and wife, as life changes.
- What is one useful thing you learned recently, and how could you put it into practice?
- What helps you feel peaceful when life feels stressful?
- How can our family help one another live with faith and gratitude?
