Four barriers can block Allah’s forgiveness
“Whoever makes things easy for someone in difficulty, Allah will make things easy for him in this world and the hereafter.”
Allah’s forgiveness is vast, but believers must remove four barriers, shirk, hostility, unlawful earnings, and openly committing sins, through sincere worship, reconciliation, lawful living, and repentance.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Frames forgiveness as abundant but identifies four barriers to receiving it.
- Warns against shirk and explains three kinds of injustice.
- Urges reconciliation, forgiveness, patience, and helping fellow Muslims.
- Explains how unchecked desires and grudges can lead to wrongdoing.
- Warns that unlawful earnings can block accepted supplication and lead to punishment.
- Condemns publicizing sins while emphasizing sincere repentance and hope in Allah’s mercy.
- Concludes with supplications for forgiveness, reconciliation, the sick, and oppressed Muslims.
In the khateeb's words
“No matter how many times a person sins or how numerous their sins may be. However, we need to clarify that forgiveness has causes and impediments, causes and barriers.”
“Therefore, freeing yourself from grudges today is better for you than being reprived of forgiveness during time of blessings.”
“Whoever makes things easy for someone in difficulty, Allah will make things easy for him in this world and the hereafter.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that Allah’s forgiveness is boundless and that we should return to Him when we make mistakes. The khateeb described four barriers to forgiveness: associating partners with Allah, holding enmity toward other Muslims, consuming unlawful earnings, and openly committing or boasting about sins. He encouraged us to make peace, forgive others, and help people through difficulties for Allah’s sake. He also reminded us that worship goes together with treating people well and being honest with money. Through the story of a man distressed by his past sins, he gave us hope that sincere repentance, leaving wrongdoing, and doing good can lead to Allah’s forgiveness.
- What could you do this week to make things easier for someone having a hard time?
- What helps you take the first step toward making peace after an argument?
- What good action could you choose after realizing you made a mistake?
