Dawah needs knowledge and good character
“The da'i should be someone who is beloved to the people, meaning they have good character.”
Effective da'wah begins with sound knowledge, personal reform, good character, and patient understanding of the people being invited to Islam.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The khutbah opens by presenting Islam as a lasting blessing that carries into the grave and hereafter.
- It introduces da'wah in America and explains that messengers understand their people's language, culture, and challenges.
- It argues that a da'i must be beloved, trustworthy, beneficial, and grounded in good character.
- It explains the first prophetic duty in Surah al-Jumu'ah: conveying revelation accurately without compromising it.
- It distinguishes the foundations of Muslim belief from the gradual development of religious practice, especially for new Muslims.
- It closes by emphasizing sound knowledge, exemplary conduct, and community support for converts and neighbors.
In the khateeb's words
“The da'i should be someone who is beloved to the people, meaning they have good character.”
“Sometimes when we give dawah we feel like we have to sometimes alter it to make it more palatable for people.”
“it also emphasizes the importance of the quality of what you know that it has to be with sound knowledge”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Islam is a blessing whose value lasts beyond this life. Sharing that blessing begins with improving our own character, being trustworthy, and helping others. He explained that understanding people means learning about their culture and the challenges they face, as well as speaking their language. Drawing on his own experience of becoming Muslim, he encouraged the community to support new Muslims patiently as they learn and grow in practice. He also reminded us to share what we know accurately, even when it is only a little.
- What is one way you could show kindness and trustworthiness at school this week?
- How could our family help someone who is just beginning to learn about Islam?
- What could you say when a friend asks a question about Islam that you don't know how to answer?
