Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Jul 18, 2026.

True success requires a pure heart

“Be in the world like a stranger or wayfarer as if it's just one stop on your destination.”

The khateeb, at 11:54

In one sentence

True success in this life and the next depends on attaining a qalb salim, a pure, sound heart that loves what Allah loves, acts with sincerity, and is guarded from corruption.

The khutbah in 8 steps

  1. Modern science on the heart's nervous system confirms what the Quran said 1400 years ago about hearts that reason
  2. The hadith of the morsel of flesh: when the heart is sound, the whole body is sound
  3. Ibrahim's du'a and the Day when only a sound heart (qalb salim) benefits
  4. Defining the pure heart: taqwa, loving obedience as a gift not a burden, and living as a stranger in the dunya
  5. Eagerness for reward: the multiplied value of salah in the masjid and not attributing good deeds to oneself
  6. The pure heart fears bid'ah and doubtful matters and examines its intention (ikhlas) in every act
  7. The terrifying hadith of the martyr, scholar, and giver judged first for riya, and the sahaba's fear of hypocrisy
  8. How to attain it: du'a for a firm heart, renewing iman, guarding the tongue, dhikr and Quran, quality over quantity in worship
Try this week
Regularly make the du'a "Ya muqallib al-qulub, thabbit qalbi 'ala dinik" (O Changer of hearts, keep my heart firm on Your religion)
Ask Allah to renew your iman, since it wears out like a garment
Keep the tongue moist with dhikr and listen to Quran constantly, in headphones, the gym, the car
Audit your intention before every act: prayer, hijab, work, sadaqah, is any part of it for other than Allah?
Prioritize praying salah in the masjid, whose reward is multiplied 27 times
Give sadaqah privately and pray a few rak'at with sincerity rather than many heedlessly
Guard the tongue from insult, slander, and arrogance, remembering the angels record every word
Stay completely away from doubtful matters and bid'ah rather than walking near the edge

For the dinner table

Today's khutbah was about the qalb salim, the sound, pure heart. Br. Ibrahim explained that the heart is more than a muscle; in Islam it is the center of reason, love for Allah, and taqwa. A pure heart loves what Allah loves, obeys Him gladly instead of feeling burdened, sees this world as a temporary stop, and keeps its intentions sincere. He also warned that sins blacken the heart, so we need to protect it with dhikr, Quran, and good company, asking Allah to keep us firm. The goal is not just doing many deeds, but doing the best deeds with ikhlas, so we can meet Allah with a clean heart.

  1. What is one small thing you can do today to make your heart cleaner for Allah?
  2. Have you ever felt like the only one doing the right thing? How did it feel, and what helped you stay strong?
  3. Why do you think Allah cares more about the quality of our good deeds than about how many we do?
