Reflection reveals the health of your heart
“What is inside the heart would always appear in a person's behavior and the way how they interact with others.”
A healthy heart is shown through thoughtful reflection, which helps believers recognize their spiritual condition, pursue the Hereafter, avoid sin, and improve their daily lives.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The heart's condition appears through a person's speech, behavior, and relationships.
- Tafakkur, or reflection, includes contemplating creation, the Quran, personal choices, world events, and life's changes.
- Quranic examples and the Prophet's practice show that reflection is a sign of a living heart.
- Ibn al-Qayyim's four beneficial areas of reflection concern the Hereafter's rewards, attaining them, its punishments, and avoiding them.
- Reflection brings Allah's pleasure, rewards, spiritual self-diagnosis, and practical correction of habits.
- The khutbah closes with prayers for forgiveness, mercy, healing, and relief for the oppressed.
In the khateeb's words
“What is inside the heart would always appear in a person's behavior and the way how they interact with others and in their actions and their speech.”
“What are practical things you can do right now so you can get those benefits? Worshipping Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Tawheed.”
“If they were to just reflect, they would come to the realization, maybe this is because you're spending too much time on your phone.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that what we carry in our hearts shows in our words, actions, and treatment of others. The khateeb encouraged tafakkur, which means taking time to reflect on Allah’s creation, the Quran, and the choices we make. He described how the Prophet made time for reflection and reminded us that Allah’s creation has a purpose. He encouraged us to think about the rewards of the hereafter and how to seek them, as well as its punishments and how to protect ourselves through repentance and obedience. Reflection can also help us notice everyday habits, such as staying up too late or spending too much time on our phones, so we can make better choices.
- What did you notice in nature today that made you think about Allah’s creation?
