Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Jan 16, 2026.

Purify the nafs through repentance

“The right blame is the one which comes with the tawbah.”

The khateeb, at 21:21

In one sentence

Because the human being is a body joined to soul, intellect, heart, and a morally pulling nafs, success depends on using revelation and reason to restrain, repent from, and purify the nafs until it becomes tranquil.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Explains human complexity and presents the Qur'an as the primary way to understand inner faculties.
  2. Distinguishes the nafs, ruh, badan, aql, and qalb, drawing on scholarly explanations.
  3. Uses a parable to argue that body and soul share responsibility for sinful actions.
  4. Describes the nafs al-ammarah, nafs al-lawwamah, and nafs al-mutma'innah.
  5. Clarifies that healthy self-blame leads to tawbah rather than despair.
  6. Concludes that success comes through purifying the nafs and disciplining desire with revelation and reason.

For the dinner table

The khutbah taught that people are more than bodies: we also have a soul, intellect, heart, and nafs. The nafs can pull us toward wrong actions, but our intellect and faith can guide us toward what is good. When we make mistakes, we should respond with honest self-accountability and tawbah, not hopelessness. The goal is to keep purifying ourselves until our inner life becomes peaceful and obedient to Allah. Each person can begin by noticing one harmful desire and choosing a better response this week.

  1. What desire is hardest for you to control, and what could help you manage it?
  2. How is healthy self-correction different from giving up on yourself?
  3. What is one small action that could help purify your heart this week?
