Repent now because your past does not define you
“Your past does not have to define your future.”
Repentance (tawba) is always open and must not be delayed, a past mistake does not define your future, so return to Allah now, while you are young, before death comes.
The khutbah in 8 steps
- Allah accepts repentance: Adam's mistake and Allah accepting his repentance set the theme
- A mistake is not the end of your story, your past need not define your future
- Warning to youth: shaitan tells the young to delay repentance; worship in youth is most beloved
- Danger of delaying repentance: death is unplanned and tomorrow is not guaranteed
- Plan 20-30 minutes daily for Allah as you plan careers, houses, vacations, and retirement
- Story of the man who killed 99 (then 100) people: sincere repentance and leaving a bad environment earned Allah's mercy
- Allah loves those who constantly repent; never despair of His mercy
- Four conditions of repentance: stop the sin, regret it, resolve not to return, restore others' rights
In the khateeb's words
“a mistake does not have to be the end of your story you pass you pass your past does not have to define your future”
“we have planned for tomorrow but tomorrow is not guaranteed for us we have planned for our careers we have planned for our houses we have planned for our vacation”
“try to make even if it's 30 minutes that 30 minutes you gotta do that 30 minutes or 20 minutes just for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“you have to stop the scene also and then second of all you have to regret what you have done before and then third of all you have to repent sincerely not to go back to that same scene”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah was about repentance, tawbah, and the door back to Allah that never closes. The imam reminded us that Adam made a mistake too, but he turned back to Allah, and that a mistake does not have to be the end of anyone's story; your past does not have to define your future. He warned especially young people not to delay repentance, because Shaytan whispers 'you're too young, enjoy yourself first,' yet tomorrow is not guaranteed for any of us. He shared the story of the man who killed 100 people and was still told he could repent, and Allah had mercy on him just for setting out on the road toward righteousness. The imam asked us to give Allah even 20 or 30 minutes every day, and ended with the conditions of real repentance: stop the sin, truly regret it, resolve not to return to it, and make things right with anyone we have wronged.
- If you gave Allah just 20 minutes every day, what would you do with them?
- Why do you think the story of the man who killed 100 people still ended with Allah's mercy?
- What is one 'environment', a place, app, or group, that makes it harder or easier for you to be good?
