Parents must give children religious guidance
“Fulfilling our responsibility towards our children does not mean providing them with a shelter and that's it.”
Because time, health, youth, and children are temporary blessings, believers must use them purposefully and fulfill their responsibility to raise children with religious guidance.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames life as a finite number of days and urges reflection on wasted time.
- Explains that health and free time are blessings most people fail to value.
- Warns against wasting unstructured time and redirects believers toward worship and beneficial activity.
- Shifts to parents’ responsibility for children beyond food, shelter, and worldly education.
- Calls for religious tarbiyah, attention to children’s influences, and sustained parental effort.
- Presents righteous children’s supplication as an enduring investment after parents’ deaths.
In the khateeb's words
“each day that goes by is one step closer to your grave each day that goes by is one step closer to that ultimate reality”
“fulfilling our responsibility towards our children does not mean providing them with a shelter and that's it”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that time, health, youth, and free time are blessings that do not last forever. Summer holidays can become an opportunity for worship, learning, and beneficial activities instead of wasted time. Parents are responsible for more than food, shelter, and school; they must guide their children’s religious growth and pay attention to their influences. This work takes sacrifice, but a righteous child’s ongoing dua can become a continuing source of reward after a parent’s death.
- What is one beneficial thing you could do with your free time this week?
- Which part of caring for children needs the most attention in our family, and why?
- How could our family help one another become people who remember parents with dua?
