Focus on worship amid worldly chaos

“If the chaos in this world is robbing me and you of our focus in worship, then stop paying attention to the chaos.”

The khateeb, at 21:09

In one sentence

Because worldly chaos and hardship are permanent features of the test of dunya, believers should focus less on uncontrollable turmoil and more on worship, personal deeds, repentance, and their relationship with Allah.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Opens with present turbulence and the Qur’anic assurance that Allah’s help is near.
  2. Reframes dunya as a test marked by toil rather than guaranteed fairness.
  3. Shows through the Prophet’s era that religious success can coexist with hypocrisy, conflict, and upheaval.
  4. Urges listeners to focus on their accountable domain: daily speech, attention, worship, and actions.
  5. Warns that death closes one’s record while ongoing charity can continue benefiting them.
  6. Encourages repentance, daily Qur’an engagement, and embodying the Sunnah before concluding with supplication and recitation.

For the dinner table

Our world can feel frightening and unsettled, but the sermon reminded us that hardship has always been part of dunya. We are not responsible for controlling every war or crisis; we are responsible for our own choices, worship, words, and attention. Instead of letting outside chaos weaken our faith, we should work on the chaos within and draw closer to Allah. Even when we mix good deeds with mistakes, sincere repentance remains open to us. We can keep building our relationship with the Qur’an, follow the Sunnah, and help others in ways Allah enables.

  1. What kinds of things make it harder for you to focus on Allah?
  2. What is one good action you can keep doing even when life feels difficult?
  3. What does asking Allah for forgiveness look like in everyday life?
