Iman must be renewed through worship
“Iman increases and then it decreases.”
Believers should continually renew their iman through worship, learning, patience, purposeful effort, ethical conduct, and trust in Allah during both ease and hardship.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The khateeb introduces iman as something that can grow old, weaken, and require continual renewal.
- He explains that humanity was created to worship Allah and that the ummah's excellence depends on faith and enjoining good.
- He reframes ease and hardship as tests, emphasizing patience as a means of spiritual growth.
- He teaches that supplication must be joined with effort, explaining tawakkul through learning, practice, and action.
- He connects iman, tawhid, ihsan, and everyday conduct such as honesty, fairness, and avoiding deception.
- He concludes by addressing loss and affliction through belief in qadr, remembrance, patience, and hope in Allah's mercy.
In the khateeb's words
“Iman increases and then it decreases. the more it could increase to get to the heavens. and they could decrease to go below the earth.”
“The only key to Jannah is La ilaha illallah. That is the only key.”
“You interacting with people, make sure you put Allah first, so you don't hurt anybody.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that our iman, or faith, needs regular renewal and care. The khateeb encouraged us to ask Allah to strengthen our faith and to take practical steps, such as learning and practicing patience. He explained that comfort and hardship are both tests, so someone's circumstances do not tell us how much Allah loves them. He reminded us that worship reaches beyond the masjid into everyday life, including being honest, fair, and careful not to hurt others. As a family, we can remember Allah, support one another through difficult times, and work toward the good things we ask Him for.
- When was patience difficult today, and what could help next time?
- What would honesty and fairness look like in a game, a group chat, or a school assignment?
