Meet every test with wholehearted devotion
“When things are good, and even if they're not good, we remember that at least we have iman.”
Complete devotion to Allah means meeting every test, worship, hardship, or blessing, with wholehearted sacrifice, steadfastness, and gratitude, trusting that obedience benefits both this life and the next.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Gratitude for iman, membership in the Prophet’s ummah, continued guidance, and Eid.
- Ibrahim’s complete devotion and sacrifices brought lasting benefit in this life and the Hereafter.
- Three men who died protecting a San Diego mosque exemplify contemporary selfless sacrifice.
- Every believer’s test may involve worship, hardship, or blessings, and Allah burdens no soul beyond its capacity.
- Listeners should respond wholeheartedly to tests, remain steadfast, and practice gratitude for faith and safety.
In the khateeb's words
“In every single circumstance, Ibrahim alayhi wa sallam's response was labdaiq, that I accept Ya Allah, I am here at your service.”
“That when Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala asks us to submit to Him, and we submit to Him, and we may have to sacrifice something, that sacrifice will pay its dividends.”
“Pray our salah five times a day? Give our zakah? Go to hajj? Fast in the month of Ramadan? Take a pause in our day when we're working?”
“When things are good, and even if they're not good, we remember that at least we have iman.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us to thank Allah for faith, belonging to the Prophet’s ummah, and continuing guidance. He described Ibrahim’s wholehearted devotion and encouraged us to bring that willingness into our own lives. He also remembered three men whose actions in San Diego he described as selfless protection of others, including a longtime masjid volunteer who helped young people. Most of us, he explained, face everyday responsibilities such as making time for prayer, giving zakah, and remaining steadfast through difficulties. Comfortable times are also a test, and we can respond by thanking Allah and using our blessings well.
- What is one blessing you enjoyed today, and how could you show Allah your thanks for it?
- What could our family do to make praying on time easier for everyone?
- How could you help someone at the masjid feel cared for this week?
