Repentance & taqwaFrom the masjid's own video, Jul 11, 2026.

Taqwa, truth, and justice save us

“Your emotions should not have any effect on what is right and what is wrong.”

The khateeb, at 10:52

In one sentence

Every Muslim should cultivate the three traits that save, taqwa of Allah, truthfulness regardless of emotion, and justice regardless of wealth, while guarding against the three destroyers: stinginess, following desires, and self-amazement.

The khutbah in 9 steps

  1. Opening supplication and the value of attending Jumu'ah
  2. Introduction of the hadith of the three things that save and the three that destroy
  3. First saving trait: taqwa of Allah in private and in public
  4. Second saving trait: speaking the truth whether happy or angry, and staying silent when angry
  5. Third saving trait: balance and justice regardless of riches or poverty, illustrated by the hadith of the three men in the cave
  6. First destroyer: stinginess (shuh) and how obeying it hardens the heart
  7. Second destroyer: following desires (hawa) and the danger of modern self-indulgent morality
  8. Third destroyer: self-amazement (i'jabul mar'i binafsihi) and the hidden nature of sins
  9. Closing supplication for Allah to hide and forgive sins
Try this week

Be just in dealings regardless of whether you or the other party are rich or poor

Do not follow whims simply because they feel good

For the dinner table

The khutbah highlighted three qualities that can save us: taqwa, speaking the truth regardless of our emotions, and treating people with justice whether they are rich or poor. Taqwa means making choices for Allah, whether we are alone or with others. When anger rises, we should pause and become quiet rather than say something we may regret. We were also reminded to resist stinginess, uncontrolled desires, and being impressed with our own good deeds. A humble and generous heart keeps turning back to Allah and asking for forgiveness.

  1. What is one private choice you could make this week just because Allah wants it?
  2. What can you do when you feel angry and want to say something hurtful?
  3. What is one small way our family could practice generosity this week?
