Knowing Allah must come before worship
“There is no one that is worthy of you giving your life to him than Allah.”
True knowledge of Allah (ma'rifah), through His Quran, His names and attributes, and reflection on reality, is the essential foundation that must precede worship, and in today's age of distraction it is what gives life meaning and protects the heart from heedlessness.
The khutbah in 9 steps
- Opening praises and duas, including for Gaza and Palestine
- Lament over Gaza's return to the headlines, children burned alive, and the false ceasefire; eulogy for slain West Bank men as martyrs
- Topic introduced: 'Have you known Allah?', many live and die without knowing Him; parable of the kidney donor who makes you want to know your benefactor
- Critique of knowing dunya but not the deen, children graduate university but cannot read al-Fatiha
- Why Allah sent messengers: to know the Creator, to learn the path of worship, and to know the recompense; knowledge before speech and action (Bukhari's chapter)
- Virtues of knowledge: more knowledge breeds more khashya; a sitting of knowledge outweighs a year of worship; one scholar is harder on Shaytan than a hundred worshippers
- Story of the man who asked a righteous person where he could sin without Allah seeing him; sin only happens in heedlessness, and the door of tawbah is open
- Second khutbah: distractions (social media, the World Cup) steal hearts from Allah and blind us to Gaza; three harms, losing solitude, losing deep reflection, leaving no space for Allah, and three remedies, the Quran, Allah's names, and observation/reflection
- Closing dua for forgiveness, for victory and relief for Gaza, and iqamah
In the khateeb's words
“You find that they know about people, they know about certain people, about what they eat, what they wear, what kind of shampoo they use, all of unnecessary things.”
“It's not about lack of information, but it's about a lot of the distractions, too much noise and too much distractions that we're having nowadays.”
“There is no one that is worthy of you giving your life to him than Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb began by reminding us to keep our brothers and sisters in Gaza and Palestine in our duas and never let their cause fade from our hearts. Then he asked a powerful question: do we truly know Allah, or do we know more about celebrities and other people than we know about our Creator? He explained that we live in an age of noise and distraction, where being busy with trivial things exhausts us and steals our hearts away from Allah. The remedy, he said, is to know Allah through His Quran, through His beautiful names and attributes, and by observing and reflecting on the world around us. He told the story of Al-Fudail ibn Iyad, a man who changed his whole life the moment he heard one verse of the Quran, proof that it is never too late to turn back. He urged us to slow down after prayer, sit for our athkar instead of rushing off, and make space for quiet reflection so our hearts can reconnect with Allah.
- If your heart had a 'screen time report,' what would it say you think about the most?
- The khateeb said being busy isn't the same as being productive, what's one thing on your schedule that doesn't really matter?
- What is one of Allah's names you know, and what does it mean to you?
