Allah can revive a hardened heart
“No matter how hard your heart is, no matter how dead it might be, Allah can still bring it back to life.”
Believers should soften hardened hearts through remembrance, awareness of death, worship, good company, and sincere prayer, trusting that Allah can revive even spiritually dead hearts.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Explains Surah Al-Hadeed's call for believers to humble their hearts and warns against hardening through worldly preoccupation.
- Uses dead earth revived by rain as a metaphor for Allah reviving hardened hearts.
- Connects remembrance of death, avoiding sin, Qur'an, and khushu to softening the heart.
- Recounts Malik bin Dinar's transformation through grief, a dream, and renewed repentance.
- Recounts Fudayl ibn al-Ayyad's repentance after hearing the same Qur'anic warning.
- Calls listeners to self-assess, attend the masjid, keep righteous company, remember death, and make sincere dua.
In the khateeb's words
“no matter how hard your heart is, no matter how dead it might be, Allah can still bring it back to life. So you have, you always have a chance with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“Yes, Allah, it is time. It is about time for my heart to be softened. And I'm going to do something about it.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that Allah calls believers to soften their hearts through His remembrance and the Qur'an. He warned that thinking we have endless time can make us too absorbed in worldly goals and forget the next life. He also shared a hopeful message: just as Allah brings dry land back to life, He can revive a hardened heart. The stories he told about Malik bin Dinar and Fudayl ibn al-Ayyad illustrated how people can turn away from serious wrongdoing and begin lives of worship. He encouraged us to remember Allah, keep good company, come to the masjid, and sincerely ask Allah for a soft and pure heart.

- How could you be a friend who helps someone remember Allah?
- What small step could we take together this week to follow the khateeb's reminder?
