Study as worship, not just achievement
“The more you learn the more humble you should be and the more you understand the more you should recognize the greatness of Allah.”
Muslim students should pursue every kind of knowledge as worship that deepens reflection on Allah, confidently represent Islam, and remain anchored to the Quran and Sunnah rather than letting education distract from the Hereafter.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Reframes the new school year by asking why Muslims should seek knowledge beyond grades and achievement.
- Uses Quranic guidance to connect knowledge with humility, fear of Allah, and reflection on creation.
- Connects biology, mathematics, and history to recognizing Allah’s design, order, and lessons in human history.
- Uses the account attributed to Imam Abu Hanifa to encourage rational reflection about the Creator.
- Urges students to ask questions, listen to understand, research what they do not know, and consult knowledgeable people.
- Gives three school-year priorities: renew intentions, confidently maintain Muslim identity, and keep education connected to Allah and the Hereafter.
- Closes by urging self-assessment, commitment to the Quran and Sunnah, continued learning, and daily supplication.
In the khateeb's words
“the more you learn the more humble you should be and the more you understand the more you should recognize the greatness of Allah”
“don't look at Islam as something you need to hide learn your religion so that when someone asks you about it you can answer with confidence wisdom and good character”
“you can still get straight A's and still be losing”
For the dinner table
As our children begin a new school year, learning is more than grades: it can be worship when we intend to benefit people. The khutbah teaches that real knowledge should make us humbler and more aware of Allah, whether we study the Quran, science, mathematics, or history. We should be confident about being Muslim, keep our prayers and principles, and answer questions with wisdom and good character. We should ask questions, research what we do not know, and keep our education connected to Allah and the Hereafter by holding to the Quran and Sunnah.
- What subject could you connect to signs of Allah's creation this week, and how?
- How can you respond when someone asks about a Muslim practice you follow?
- What is one way to keep schoolwork from making you forget Allah?
