Ask Allah for ease, then act
“What made the prophets very prophetic is not what they felt, but their response to what they felt.”
Believers should not wait for fear, anxiety, or imperfection to disappear; they should ask Allah for capacity and ease, then fulfill the responsibilities He has assigned them.
The khutbah in 4 steps
- Normalizes human fear and stress, emphasizing that prophetic character lies in responding well to emotions.
- Unpacks Musa's dua for an expanded chest, an easier task, untied speech, and clear communication.
- Connects the dua to accepting personal responsibilities, acting despite imperfection, and avoiding overthinking.
- Closes by urging perseverance in worship and difficult emotions, followed by prayers and community reminders.
In the khateeb's words
“But what made the prophets very prophetic is not what they felt, but their response to what they felt.”
“You were never meant to be perfect. You were never built to be perfect. You were built to be imperfect, but you were built with the ability to actually work through all of the blemishes.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that feeling afraid, stressed, or nervous does not mean our faith is weak. Musa faced a frightening responsibility and asked Allah to expand his chest, ease his task, and help people understand him. We should ask Allah for help while still taking the next step, even when we do not feel ready or perfect. Allah can help us grow through our weaknesses, so we should keep doing our responsibilities and worship instead of waiting for fear or discomfort to disappear.
- When have you done something difficult even while feeling afraid?
- What responsibility can you ask Allah to help you handle this week?
- What is one small step you can take instead of overthinking?
