Seek forgiveness for a clean slate
“Who would not want a clean slate and a fresh start?”
Sincere, habitual seeking of Allah’s forgiveness through repentance, renewed faith, and consistent good deeds can bring a clean slate, transform sins into good deeds, and open blessings even before Hajj.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- The speaker longs for Hajj’s forgiveness reward and asks what non-pilgrims can do meanwhile.
- A Quranic passage contrasts grave sins with repentance, faith, and righteous deeds that transform sins into good deeds.
- Istighfar is presented as underrated and repeatedly modeled by the Prophet during meetings and daily life.
- Quranic promises connect seeking forgiveness with rain, wealth, children, gardens, and rivers.
- Stories of Umar ibn al-Khattab and Hasan al-Basri illustrate seeking forgiveness during hardship.
- The baker and Imam Ahmad story closes with habitual istighfar, answered supplication, and prayers for the suffering.
In the khateeb's words
“Who would not want a clean slate and a fresh start. All of us want that.”
“Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is saying, if these things are important to you, you really want them, guess what? Just seek His forgiveness, ask Him for His forgiveness and He will bless you with these things.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah was about seeking Allah's forgiveness, which is something small that many of us forget but is actually huge in Allah's sight. The khateeb told us that even if we can't go to Hajj yet, we can still get a fresh start by being truly sorry, believing in Allah, and keeping up good deeds, and Allah is so merciful that He can even turn our bad deeds into good ones. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked Allah for forgiveness at least a hundred times a day, even in his most important meetings. Allah promises in the Quran that seeking forgiveness brings blessings like rain, wealth, children, gardens and rivers, and that is why Umar and al-Hasan al-Basri told people to say 'astaghfirullah' when they needed help. We also heard the story of a baker who said astaghfirullah with every move he made. Allah answered all his du'as, and even his wish to meet Imam Ahmad came true when Imam Ahmad was dragged out of a masjid and ended up at his bakery.
- If Allah can turn bad deeds into good ones, what is one thing you would like a fresh start on this week?
- When during your day, like in the car, at school or doing chores, could you say 'astaghfirullah' a few times?
- Why do you think the baker's du'a to meet Imam Ahmad was answered in such a surprising way?
