Use summer to grow in faith and character
“I have come back with adab, with etiquette, with the knowledge of the proper way of approaching things, and with knowledge.”
Young people and their families should use summer's health and free time intentionally for beneficial learning, character-building, and service to Allah.
The khutbah in 4 steps
- Gives thanks for physical, emotional, and spiritual blessings and urges God-consciousness and sincere companionship.
- Introduces summer as an opportunity to guide youth toward beneficial use of health and free time.
- Encourages balanced summer goals involving useful religious and worldly learning rather than wasted play.
- Uses Zayd ibn Thabit to show that sincere service can find alternative avenues, then closes with supplication.
In the khateeb's words
“The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam tells us there are two blessings that most of people are ripped off by. And they are health and free time.”
“They don't need to become an imam by the end of the summer. They should not spend 12 hours a day studying Islamic sciences if they don't have the fortitude for it.”
“I have come back with adab, with etiquette, with the knowledge of the proper way of approaching things, and with knowledge.”
“One avenue was blocked, but because of his sincerity, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala opened another avenue for him.”
For the dinner table
Allah has given us many blessings, including health, free time, family, faith, and the ability to worship. The khateeb reminded us that young people should use summer purposefully by learning useful things, building something beneficial, and growing in both religious and worldly knowledge. The stories of great Muslims showed that good manners, patient effort, supportive parents, and sincere intentions matter deeply. Even when one opportunity closes, Allah can open another path for someone who sincerely wants to serve and do good.
- What is one useful thing you would like to learn or build this summer?
- How can good manners change the way we learn from someone?
- What could you do if a goal or opportunity does not work out as planned?
